Central heating systems are rarely completely silent. Water moves through pipework, metal expands as it heats and valves regulate flow. The important question is whether the sound is normal background operation or a new noise that indicates a problem.

Is Radiator Noise Normal?

Occasional clicking as radiators warm up or cool down can be normal. Metal expands slightly as its temperature changes, and heating pipes can move against floorboards, brackets or walls.

New, persistent or unusually loud sounds deserve more attention. Check whether the noise comes from one radiator or several, starts only when heating first turns on, is accompanied by cold spots or happens only at a particular valve.

Gurgling or Bubbling Radiator

Gurgling is commonly associated with trapped air. When air collects inside a radiator, hot water cannot fill the entire unit evenly. You may notice a cold area near the top, gurgling, slow heating or an uneven temperature.

Bleeding the radiator can release trapped air. Switch the heating off and allow the radiator to cool before opening the bleed valve. After bleeding, check your boiler pressure because releasing air can slightly reduce system pressure.

If the same radiator repeatedly fills with air, the heating system may need further investigation.

Banging or Knocking Sounds

Banging can originate from radiators, valves or nearby pipework. Possible causes include pipe movement, water flow changing quickly, loose pipe clips, valve problems, poor system balance or circulation issues.

Try to identify whether the sound comes from the radiator body or from pipes beneath the floor. A loud bang every time the heating starts may be related to expansion or sudden flow changes rather than trapped air.

Clicking or Ticking Sounds

Light clicking or ticking is often the sound of metal expanding and contracting. This is especially common when a cold heating system starts warming.

The noise can become louder where pipes pass tightly through floorboards, joists, wall openings or metal clips. If the radiator heats correctly and the clicking stops once temperatures stabilise, it may simply be normal thermal movement.

Whistling Radiator

A radiator or valve that whistles can indicate water moving through a restricted opening. A thermostatic radiator valve or lockshield valve may be contributing to the sound.

Whistling can also be associated with excessive flow, incorrect valve position, poor system balance or pump settings. Do not randomly adjust every lockshield valve because this can disturb system balance.

Hissing Sounds

A gentle hiss can occasionally come from water flow through a valve. A persistent hiss should be investigated, especially if you also notice moisture.

Check around radiator valves, the bleed valve, pipe connections and the radiator body. A slightly open bleed valve can allow air or water to escape.

Noise When Heating Starts

Some noises appear only during the first few minutes after the heating switches on. This pattern often points toward pipe expansion, water beginning to circulate, valves opening or air moving through the system.

Walk around and listen carefully. The sound may travel through pipework and appear to come from a radiator even when the actual source is elsewhere.

What You Can Safely Check

Feel for cold spots, check TRV settings, listen to several radiators, check boiler pressure and look for leaks. Cold at the top can suggest trapped air, while cold at the bottom can indicate sludge or restricted circulation.

When Sludge Can Contribute to Noise

Sludge and debris can restrict circulation through radiators and pipework. Signs can include cold radiator bottoms, slow heating, uneven room temperatures, pump or boiler noise and dirty heating water during maintenance.

System cleaning or flushing may be appropriate depending on the condition of the system.

Professional diagnosis is recommended if banging is loud or persistent, several radiators are noisy, radiators do not heat correctly, boiler pressure keeps changing, valves are leaking or you suspect poor circulation or sludge.
